The temple is a walled city within the old city, entered under tall painted gopurams. Your guide leads you to the shrines of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar and through the Hall of a Thousand Pillars, at your pace.
Each night the deity is carried in procession to rest. Staying for it makes a late evening, so it is your choice on the day.

MaduraiRameswaram
170 km by private car, about 3 to 3½ hours. The last stretch crosses the sea to the island by the Pamban road bridge.
Morning
Drive to Rameswaram
An early start, with a breakfast stop on the way. You reach the island before the midday closing.
Afternoon
The sacred wells of Ramanathaswamy Temple
Pilgrims bathe at Agni Theertham on the seafront and then at the twenty-two wells inside the temple before darshan. Your guide takes you through them in order, and a room is kept nearby to change.
Evening
Darshan and the long corridors
After darshan, walk the pillared outer corridors the temple is known for, when the lamps are lit and the crowds thin.
Most Tamil Nadu temples close around midday and reopen in the late afternoon. Each day keeps temples for the morning and evening and puts the road in between.
Dress traditionally and modestly. Footwear is left outside every temple.
Darshan arrangements differ from temple to temple and can change on festival days. We confirm what is possible at each one before you travel.
Tell us about stairs, long walks and rest needs. The plan is paced around the person who needs the most care.
Distances and drive times are approximate. Temple hours and rules are confirmed before you travel.
